The 10-second answer
Find your height in the chart. Read across. Road frames come in centimeters, mountain frames in inches or S-through-XXL, and hybrids in plain S/M/L. So a 5'9" rider lands on a 54–55 cm road bike, a 17-inch medium mountain bike, or a medium hybrid. That's the answer for most people.
Two things wreck that tidy answer, though. Brands don't measure the same way — I've had a Trek 56 and a Giant 56 sit an entire size apart on the same customer, so pull up the maker's own geometry chart every time. And when your height falls right on a line between two rows? Standover clearance breaks the tie. That's the next section down.

The whole range, one table, roughly 4'10" up to 6'6". Measure in your socks, back and heels flat to the wall. Shoes add half an inch of lie.

See how the bands overlap at the edges? That's deliberate. Frame sizing was never a clean cutoff — your leg length, your torso, your arm reach all tug the fit one way or another. Two riders who both measure exactly 5'10" can end up happiest on different frames.
So treat the chart as a starting point, not gospel. Before you hand over money, find the exact model's geometry table and hunt down two numbers: reach and stack. Reach is how far forward the bars sit; stack is how tall the front end stands. Those two tell you how the bike really fits, far more honestly than the seat-tube number printed on the label. A modern compact frame with a steeply sloping top tube might say M and measure nothing like the old-school 54 your mate swears by.
Stuck between two sizes? Check standover
Stand over the bike, flat-footed, in the shoes you'll actually ride in. Look down at the gap between the top tube and your crotch. That gap is standover clearance, and it settles most in-between calls. Too little of it and you'll rack yourself the first time you slam to a stop at a light — ask me how I know. On the fence? The frame that gives you the clearance wins.
How much you want comes down to terrain. Road and gravel bikes only need enough to clear the top tube when you put a foot down. Mountain bikes want more — you'll be bailing off the back on steep, chunky ground where a surprise dab is just part of the day.

Want a number that's yours, not some height average? Measure your cycling inseam. Barefoot, feet six to eight inches apart, back against a wall. Pull a hardcover book up between your legs, spine to the ceiling, and snug it up the way you'd sit on a saddle — firm, not polite. Mark the wall at the top edge of the spine. Measure from the floor to the mark. That's your inseam.
For a road frame, take your inseam in centimeters and multiply by 0.65 for a center-to-center size, or 0.67 for center-to-top. A 78 cm inseam works out to about a 51 cm center-to-center frame. Saddle height runs off a different old trick, and the LeMond formula still holds up decades later: inseam × 0.883 gives you bottom-bracket to saddle-top.
Mountain bikes ditched this math years ago. Seat tubes slope too hard and sizing runs on reach and standover now, so use your inseam for the clearance check — don't try to reverse-engineer a frame size out of it.
Rule of thumb I keep coming back to: stretching a slightly small frame with a longer stem and a setback post is easy. Shrinking a too-big one is basically impossible. On drop-bar bikes, when you're torn, size down.
When to size up, when to size down
Height puts you in the right row. Your proportions and how you ride decide which way you lean when two sizes both look plausible.
- Long legs, short torso — size down. You get the standover you need, and the shorter reach tends to suit that build anyway.
- Long torso and arms? Size up. Or keep the smaller frame and bolt on a longer stem to claw the reach back.
- Racy, head-down position: size down for a lower, tighter cockpit.
- Upright and all-day: size up. Taller front end, roomier reach, happier back.
- New to drop bars, size down. Spacers and a shorter stem are a five-minute add; you can't invent reach that a too-big frame already ate.
- Trail and enduro riders mostly go the other way now — long reach, short stem, more stability at speed. Just don't let it cost you your standover.
Frame size isn't wheel size
Here's the trap that snags nearly everyone buying online: frame size and wheel size are two completely separate things. Frame size is the 54 cm, or the L. Wheel size is 700c, 650b, 29-inch, 27.5-inch, 26-inch — the diameter of the hoops, nothing to do with the frame.
Adult bikes get sold by frame size, wheels already matched to it. Kids' bikes flip the whole thing — they're sold by wheel diameter, 12, 16, 20, 24 inch, because a growing kid outgrows frame numbers faster than you can buy them. And if you're down near the bottom of the chart, say 4'10" to 5'0", it pays to try both a 24-inch kids' bike and a small adult frame. Reach decides that one, not just standover.
Quick answers to the sizing questions people actually ask
- Too big or too small — which hurts more? Too big, every time. A slightly small bike takes a raised saddle and a new stem and it's fine. Too big leaves you stretched out over the bars with nothing to fix it.
- Can I just go by height? For a rough first pick, sure. With real money on the line, add the standover check and the model's reach and stack.
- Do women's frames run off a different chart? No — same height-to-size logic. What changes is reach, stack and the contact points, not the size scale. Read the geometry chart and you'll see it.
- Dead on a boundary, say bang on 5'9"? Ride both if there's any way to. Can't? Take the smaller frame for sharper handling or the bigger one for comfort — and let standover veto anything that doesn't clear.
