Does the Inner Tube Size Have to Match the Tire?
A tube is a stretchy balloon printed with a width range, not a single fixed size — so it doesn't have to match your tire exactly. What does have to match: wheel diameter and valve. Here's the chart.

The short answer: no, it doesn't have to match exactly
No. Well, mostly no. The width doesn't have to match, and that catches people out because the sidewall makes it look like it should. Here's the thing: a tube is a stretchy rubber doughnut, and it's printed with a spread of numbers rather than one. Something like 700 x 25–32c. Any tire that lands anywhere inside that spread will fit it. So if your tire reads 700 x 28, grab a tube whose range swallows 28 and walk out the door.
Two things aren't up for debate. The wheel diameter has to be dead identical — try to jam a 700c tube into a 26-inch wheel and it'll never seat, no matter how you wrestle it. And the valve has to drop through the hole in your rim. Nail those two, put the width anywhere inside the printed spread, and you're done.
Match the tube to your tire: the cheat sheet
Find the numbers on your sidewall. Read across. That width column is a range on purpose, so don't panic if your exact size isn't sitting in the table — anything inside the span works.

The old sizes are where folks get burned. A 27-inch tire measures 630 mm, not 700c, even though the numbers look neighbourly. And a 26 x 1⅜ city tire is 590 mm — nowhere near the 559 mm of a 26-inch mountain bike. Same '26' stamped on the rubber. Completely different tube. I've handed a mate the wrong one over exactly this.
Reading the numbers on your tire
Your tire tells you its size twice, and one of those numbers lies more than the other. The big obvious one — 700 x 25c — is the shop name, the one everybody quotes. The little raised ISO code next to it, 25-622, is what the people who actually design rims go by. When a tire's markings look like they're arguing with each other, trust the ISO.
- 700 x 25c: the 700 is roughly the outer diameter, the 25 is width in millimetres. That 'c' on the end? An old French sizing letter. It means nothing you can measure, so people who read it as a number get it wrong.
- 25-622 is the ISO code (some call it ETRTO) moulded in nearby — width first at 25, then the bead-seat diameter, 622, which is the figure your tube absolutely has to share. Trust this one over anything else on the tire.
- 26 x 1.95 — that's the inch style you get on mountain and cruiser rubber. Diameter, then width, both in inches this time.
Diameter is the number you can't get wrong
Here's the reassuring bit: there really aren't many wheel sizes. A pile of marketing names, sure, but only a handful of actual diameters underneath. The one that counts is the bead-seat diameter, that second ISO number in millimetres. Match it exactly and the tube drops in. Get it wrong and you can pump till your arms give out — it's not going to work.
- 700c and 29-inch are both 622 mm. Same wheel, swap freely.
- 27.5-inch and 650b: 584 mm, again identical.
- 26-inch mountain and cruiser: 559 mm.
- 27-inch, the stuff on older road bikes, comes in at 630 mm — a touch bigger than 700c, which is exactly why you can't swap one for the other.
- 26 x 1⅜ off an English 3-speed is 590 mm. Looks like a 26-inch MTB. Isn't. That 559-versus-590 gap has sold a lot of wrong tubes.
- Then the little ones: 24-inch is 507 mm, a 20-inch BMX is 406 mm, and a 16-inch kids' bike is 305 mm.
So two names for one wheel happens constantly — 700c is 29-inch, 650b is 27.5-inch. The nasty version is one name covering two wheels, and '26-inch' genuinely means two different tires depending on the bike underneath you.
Width: get close, don't sweat the millimetre
A tube blows up to fill whatever tire it's living in, within reason. That's the whole reason the width is printed as a span instead of a single figure. A 700 x 25–32c tube is perfectly content on a skinny 25, a fat 32, or anything between. Keep it inside that span and it seats clean, holds air evenly, and doesn't bunch up on itself.
Wander past either end, though, and things get dicey. Go too narrow and the tube stretches thin over the tire — you'll get home on it, but it's a bit more flat-prone while you do. Too wide is the worse call: all that extra rubber has to fold somewhere to fit, and a fold can get pinched under the bead or crease into a thin spot that eventually lets go with a bang. Torn between two sizes? Go down, not up.
The valve has to fit too
Diameter and width take care of the tire side. The valve is the rim side, and it's a different kind of match — no range, no wiggle room. Your rim's been drilled for one valve type, and the tube you buy has to slot into that exact hole.
- Shallow box-section rims, up to about 25 mm deep? A standard 40 mm valve is fine.
- 40 to 50 mm rims want a 60 mm valve.
- Deeper aero rims, 50 to 60 mm, need 80 mm — or screw a Presta extender onto what you've already got.
- The rule I go by: the valve should stick out 15 to 20 mm past the rim, enough that the pump head can actually bite.

This is a strict match — the tube's valve has to suit your rim. Length starts to matter the second your rims go deep. A stubby 40 mm valve just disappears into a 50 mm aero rim — there's nothing poking out for the pump head to grab, and you'll stand there swearing at it.
When 'close enough' is genuinely fine — and when it bites
Loads of near-misses are totally fine. A couple will strand you. Here's the line.
- A narrower tube in a wider tire — say a 25–32 tube inside a 35 mm tire — will get you home no problem. It's stretched a little thin so it punctures a touch easier, but swap it back to the right range once you're off the bike and nobody's the wiser.
- The other way round is where I'd hesitate. A wider tube crammed into a narrower tire has to fold its spare rubber up somewhere, and a trapped fold pinches under the bead or creases into a weak point that eventually goes. Skip it if you've got any choice at all.
- Right width but wrong diameter never, ever works. Don't try to bully a 26-inch tube into a 700c tire by pumping it huge — it'll bulge at the valve and pop, usually about ten minutes after you've congratulated yourself.
- On tubeless you might not run a tube day to day, but the spare stuffed in your saddlebag still has to match the diameter and sit inside the width range. Check that at the kitchen table, not crouched in a lay-by at dusk.
Straight answers to the usual questions
- 700c tube in a 29er? Go for it — both are 622 mm. Just grab the width range that brackets your tire.
- Road tube in a wider gravel tire? Fine, so long as the tire's width falls inside the tube's range. But a 700 x 25–32 tube will never fill a 45 mm gravel tire — bump up to a wider range.
- Does the width have to be exact? Nope. It's a range on purpose. Land anywhere inside it and that's the job done.
- My tube says 700 x 25–32 and my tire's a 700 x 28 — is that the one? Yep. 28 sits comfortably inside 25–32.
- Presta or Schrader, does it actually matter? This one does. The valve has to fit your rim's hole, full stop.
