Why Your Bike Chain Keeps Falling Off (And How to Fix It)
A chain that won't stay on is almost always a mis-set limit screw, not a dead drivetrain. Here's how to find the real cause in the right order.

All screw directions assume standard derailleurs, where clockwise reduces travel in that direction. If turning a screw makes the problem worse, you've got the wrong one — back it off and try the other.
The 30-second answer
Most chains that keep falling off do it for one boring reason: a front derailleur limit screw sitting a quarter-turn out of adjustment. It's free to fix and takes about five minutes with whatever your derailleur's limit screws take — a small Phillips screwdriver on older Shimano, a 2mm hex key on most modern derailleurs.
The trick is watching where the chain lands. Drops off the chainrings toward the frame? That's your low (L) limit up front. Off the big ring toward the pedal? The high (H) limit. Falls off the cassette into the spokes at the back? Rear derailleur limit screw. Nail that one observation and you've narrowed six possible causes down to one.
Everything below is ordered cheapest-and-likeliest first. Work top to bottom and stop when the dropping stops.
Diagnose it in this order
Don't start swapping parts. Start looking. Run these in sequence and most people never get past step three.
- 1. Watch where it drops. Front or rear? Inboard or outboard? This alone points to a single limit screw.
- 2. Check the freebies. Right chain length, no obvious slack, and — on a 1x — the clutch actually switched on.
- 3. Set the limit screws. Costs nothing, fixes the majority of drops. Details below.
- 4. Sight the derailleur hanger. A bent one fakes almost every other symptom on this list.
- 5. Measure chain wear. A stretched chain drops no matter how perfect your limits are.
- 6. Check chainline. Cross-chaining and 1x offset errors hold the chain at an angle it can't keep.
- 7. Add retention hardware only if it's still dropping — narrow-wide ring, clutch, or chain catcher.
Set the limit screws
Both derailleurs carry two little screws marked H and L. They don't move the chain — they cap how far the derailleur is allowed to travel. Set the cap too generously and the chain sails right off the end of the rings or cogs. Clockwise always reduces travel in that direction. Quarter turns only. Re-test the shift after each one.
Up front: if the chain dumps to the inside when you shift to the small ring, the L screw is letting the cage swing too far in — snug it clockwise. If it throws off the big ring toward the crank arm, tighten H clockwise instead. You want the cage plates a millimetre or two from the chain at each extreme, close but not rubbing.
Out back: the L screw is the one that stops the derailleur before it drops into the spokes. If the chain climbs over the biggest cog, turn L clockwise a hair. If it slips off the smallest cog into the frame gap, that's the H screw. Get these two right and the derailleur physically can't push the chain past the end of the cassette.
Then check the hanger
The rear derailleur hangs off a small aluminium tab called the hanger, and that tab is meant to be sacrificial. Tip the bike onto its drive side, lean it against a wall wrong, or clip a rock, and the hanger bends before your frame does. Trouble is, a hanger bent even a couple of degrees drags the whole derailleur out of line, so shifts go mushy and the chain wanders off cogs it used to hold fine.
Sight down from behind: the two derailleur pulleys should sit dead vertical, in line with the cassette cogs. Leaning inboard at the bottom is the classic bent-hanger look. The proper fix is a hanger alignment gauge (Park Tool's DAG-2.2 is the shop standard), but hangers are model-specific, inexpensive parts — if yours is tweaked and you don't own the tool, a bike shop sorts it in minutes. Don't just bend it back by hand and hope.
Measure the chain before spending money
A worn chain is longer than a new one — the rivets and rollers wear until the whole thing has literally stretched. Once it's long enough, it stops meshing cleanly with the cassette teeth and it'll skip or drop under power even with perfect limits. People miss this one because the fix isn't an adjustment, it's a replacement.
A chain checker costs under a tenner and takes ten seconds. Replace at 0.5% elongation for 11- and 12-speed, 0.75% for 10-speed and older, wider chains. Leave it too long and you grind the cassette and chainrings to match — then a fresh chain skips on the worn teeth and you're buying the whole lot. Cheap tool, expensive to skip.
Rule out chainline and cross-chaining
Chains hate running at a steep sideways angle. Big ring to biggest cog, or small ring to smallest cog, drags the chain across at a slant where it's happy to jump. Ease off those two extreme combinations and a lot of mystery drops disappear. That's not a fault to fix — it's a habit to break.
On a 1x setup, chainline is a hardware question. Fit a chainring with the wrong offset for your frame — a Boost 148 ring on a standard hub, or the reverse — and the chain runs crooked across the entire cassette. Same story after a new bottom bracket or a crank that's spaced wrong. If the drops started right after a parts swap, that's your prime suspect.
Still dropping? Add retention
Limits set, hanger straight, chain fresh, chainline clean, and it still throws the chain over rough ground — now you buy hardware. On a 1x, a narrow-wide chainring alternates fat and thin teeth to grip the chain's alternating links, and a clutch derailleur (Shimano Shadow+, SRAM Type 2) keeps the cage under tension so the chain can't slap loose. Check that the clutch is actually switched on; plenty of riders go months with it off.
Running 2x? A chain catcher — an N-Gear Jump Stop or a K-Edge clamp — bolts in by the inner ring and blocks the chain from dropping into the frame. Ten quid, twenty minutes, and the one drop that scratches your paint and jams your cranks stops happening. Worth it on any 2x you actually push hard.
The honest bottom line
Reach for the screwdriver before the credit card. A mis-set limit screw or a clutch that got flicked off covers most of these, and both are free. A chain checker is the one tool worth owning outright — it stops the slow, expensive drift of wearing out your whole drivetrain.
If shifting went vague across every gear at once, suspect the hanger and get it gauged. And if the chain's older than the last time you can honestly remember cleaning it, just measure it. Odds are it's stretched, and no amount of screw-turning fixes worn metal.
