Why Your Bike Tire Keeps Going Flat (and How to Stop It for Good)
A tire that keeps going flat almost always has its original cause still lodged inside. Here's the five-minute, in-order diagnosis a mechanic runs, plus the fix for every cause from pinch flats to rim tape.

First, the honest answer: the cause is still in the tire
Here's the truth nobody wants. The thing that flatted you the first time is almost certainly still in the tire. A fleck of glass. A hair-thin wire off some shredded truck retread. A blackthorn spike from that hedge you clipped on the descent. It's burrowed into the casing and it's sitting there, patient, and every shiny new tube you fit gets speared in the exact same spot inside a mile.
Two other culprits round out the list. Pressure that's too low — that's your classic pinch flat, and it keeps happening until you fix the number, not the tube. And a rim strip or valve quietly weeping from the inside, in the one place you'd never think to look. Finding all three takes about five minutes if you go in order. Most people never do step one.
So stop. Before you tear open another tube, pull the tire clean off the rim and don't fit a single thing until you've found what's actually doing this to you. I once watched a mate churn through six tubes on one ride because he wouldn't. (Tire, tyre — US and UK spelling, same headache.)

That dead tube is a confession, as long as you line it back up against the tire. Pump it till you hear the hiss or feel the air on your cheek, then hold it flat to the casing with the valve sitting at the valve hole. Wherever the leak is now points dead at the spot you need to inspect.
Position is everything. Two tidy slits side by side on the inner edge? Pinch flat — pure pressure, nothing stuck in there. One ragged tear on the tread side means something punched in from outside, and nine times in ten it's still buried in the casing, waiting for tube number two. A hole facing the rim blames your tape or a spoke. Right at the valve base, the valve's finished, and so is the tube.
Now feel. Run a fingertip slowly around the whole inside of the tire — and I mean slowly, because whatever sliced the tube will happily open your finger too. Learned that one the hard way. A cotton ball is safer; it catches on the glass sliver your fingertip glides right over. Snag on something? Dig it out. There's your flat.
Pressure is behind a big share of repeat flats
Low pressure is the sneaky one. It runs behind a huge chunk of repeat flats and never gets the blame. Too soft, and the tube pinches against the rim edge every time you drop off a kerb — two little slits, snakebite, flat. The cure is thirty seconds a week and a floor pump with a gauge on the head.
Every tire has a range molded into the sidewall. Live inside it. Go under the minimum and you pinch; blow past the max and the whole thing can lift off the rim with a bang you feel in your teeth. Rough starting points by type below — but that sidewall number always wins:

Grab a mismatched tube or tire and you'll be fighting flats till you're grey. Bad seating, blow-offs, tubes bulging out where they've got no business being. The sidewall spells out exactly what you're running. Two numbers carry the weight: width, and bead-seat diameter.
Trust the ETRTO code above everything. '37-622' reads as 37 mm wide on a 622 mm bead seat. That second number is non-negotiable — it has to match your rim. 622 covers road and 29ers, 584 is your 27.5in/650B, 559 is the old 26in stuff. Width just needs to land somewhere inside your rim's range.

Turn the tube over. Hole on the rim-facing side? Your rim tape has crept, torn, or it's simply too narrow — and the naked spoke holes underneath are grinding through tube after tube. Those cheap clear plastic strips are the usual villains. Bin them. Fit proper rim tape — cloth, or a high-pressure adhesive like Stan's — cut to your rim's inner width, covering every last spoke hole, sitting bang in the center.
Valves die in dull little ways. A Presta core backs itself loose and you'll catch the faint hiss; a Presta core tool — the Park Tool one lives in my saddlebag — snugs it back in about four seconds. Schrader cores wander loose too, but they need their own tool, and the notch on the back of a lot of valve caps does it in a pinch. Crack the stem where it meets the rubber, though, and that's the end of it. No glue, no tape. The tube's landfill. One more thing: go easy on the Presta lock ring. Torque it down hard against the rim and you're slowly levering the stem apart until it splits on you mid-ride.
When the tire itself is finished
Sometimes the tube's innocent. A gash bigger than 3 mm or so lets the tube pooch out through the gap and get punctured by whatever's underneath — same spot, over and over. Threads winking through the tread, a center worn dead flat, a bubble in the sidewall: that tire's done. Retire it.
Stuck roadside, you can boot the cut. A real tire boot, a folded energy-gel wrapper, a scrap of Tyvek off an old envelope — any of it, slid behind the gash, buys you the ride home. It's a get-home hack, not a repair. New tire when you're back. And if you run a puncture liner, peek at the ends — a curled or shifted liner edge chews through tubes exactly like a bad rim strip does, and it's the last place anyone thinks to look.
The flat you caused yourself
This is the one that gets everybody, veterans included. Fresh tube in, pumped up, soft again inside the hour — so you curse the 'dud' tube and reach for another. Nope. What actually happened is you nipped the tube under the bead with a tire lever while muscling that last stretch of tire back on.
Kill it for good like this. Put a breath of air in the new tube first — just enough to give it shape and float it off the rim wall. Seat that final stubborn section of bead with your thumbs, not a lever; I know it fights back, push anyway. Then walk your fingers around both sides, the whole circle, feeling for any tube caught under the bead before you inflate properly. Two minutes. It stops you burying brand-new tubes.
Still losing air with nothing obvious?
A leak too slow to see needs water. Pump the tube rock-hard, sink it into a bucket or a filled sink section by section, and watch for that steady little rope of bubbles climbing up. No water near you? Hold each stretch to your lips and your ear — you'll feel the thread-thin jet on wet skin before you ever hear it. Mark the spot. Line it up to the tire the same way as before.
When it goes down tells you plenty on its own. Soft by morning but fine on the move usually means a valve or a pinhole seeping slow. Flat within minutes of every ride screams foreign object, or a rim-tape problem that only bites once your weight loads the wheel. Same corner, same spot, ride after ride? Something's in that tire. No question.
Where I'd actually spend the effort
Flatting constantly? Two upgrades kill most of it dead. A tire with a genuine puncture belt — a Continental Gatorskin, a Schwalbe Marathon, or a tubeless setup with a good slug of sealant sloshing inside — shrugs off the glass-and-thorn stuff that used to end your rides. And a real floor pump with a gauge, so you set pressure by the number instead of thumbing the sidewall and hoping, like the rest of us used to.
The rest of this page is detective work. But dial the pressure in, wrap a tougher tire on the rim, and that sad shrinking box of spare tubes on the garage shelf finally stops emptying.
